Hernia is a condition in which an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. The common cause of hernia can be obesity, poor nutrition, smoking, and a weak muscle area at birth. There are many types of hernia, such as inguinal, umbilical, hiatal, femoral, and incisional. Inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia and it occurs when the abdominal tissue/organ pushes through the weak spot in lower abdominal wall into the groin area.

According to information available from hospital morbidity database (HMDB), HCUP and among others, it is estimated that around 10.9 million hernia repair surgeries were performed globally in 2014, and this number is projected to reach ~12 million by 2020.

The treatment of hernia involves closing the weak spot present in the muscle through which the intestinal content is protruding. Presently, there are two treatment options available – hernia repair surgeries using sutures, and hernia repair surgeries using mesh. The repairing of hernia through surgery using mesh does not create any stress on tissues or muscles; the mesh bridges the gap in the muscle/hernia orifice with few stiches or staples. The use of mesh also helps alleviate pain and reduces the chances of the hernia’s recurrence.

The growth in this market is attributed to the increasing geriatric population globally; growing prevalence of obesity; increasing adoption of tension-free hernia repair procedures; and rising adoption of advanced biologic mesh (specifically xenograft mesh) for hernia repair procedures. According to the United Nations Population Division estimates, in 2015, 601 million people are above 65, which is projected to reach 714 million by 2020. The elderly are more susceptible to hernia. For example, according to a registered study from the U.K., the prevalence of hernia increased with age from 5% in the age group 25 to 34 years, through 10% in the age group 35 to 44 years, 18% in the age group 45 to 54 years, 24% in the age group 55 to 64 years, 31% in the age group 65 to 74 years, and 45% among men aged 75 years and over. According to the European cardiovascular disease statistics, smoking remains a major public health issue in Europe, The percentage of women smokers in Europe has radically increased, and this number is almost equivalent to men and physical inactivity is more common among women than men. This and other factors lead to obesity, which gives rise to hernia and increases chances of its reoccurrence and other serious disorders. This factor increases the patient pool of hernia.

However, increasing cost of hernia repair surgical procedures and ambiguity in reimbursement policies are the factors that are expected to restrain the growth of hernia mesh devices market to a certain extent during the forecast period.

There are two types of mesh, namely, synthetic mesh and biological mesh. Synthetic Meshes can be further segmented on the basis of two criteria – its structure, and its absorbance. Synthetic mesh can be segmented into flat mesh and 3D mesh on the basis of the structure of mesh; and absorbable, non-absorbable, and composite on the basis of the absorbance of mesh.

While studying this market, we comprehensively analyzed it at a granular level by geography to provide in-depth information on regional level and country level. The regions covered include America, which covers the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay; Europe, which covers Germany, France, Italy, the U.K., Spain, Russia, Turkey, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, and the Netherlands; Asia-Pacific, which covers Japan, China, India, South Korea, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, New Zealand; and Middle East & Africa (MEA), which covers Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Israel, Oman, Kuwait, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Jordan, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, Mauritius, and South Africa.

APAC – highest number of hernia mesh implants: About 65% of total hernia repair surgeries took place world-wide, are performed in Asia-Pacific region.

But as mentioned earlier, hernia can be treated with sutures as well which is cheaper option, most oh hernia repair surgeries performed in APAC are using sutures. In APAC around only 50% people go under hernia repair using mesh are rest using sutures. But still APAC remain on number one position in terms of market volume i.e. consumption of hernia repair mesh followed by Europe and America. If % of people opting for hernia repair using suture are successfully convinced to opt for surgery using mesh, APAC will be star market.

America – Capture largest market share : In terms of consumption of hernia mesh, America stands on third position; but as soon as price factor come into picture, scenario becomes exactly opposite. Due to high prices of meshes, America is largest revenue pocket for global hernia mesh market.

Biological mesh will increase its market share: There are two types of mesh, namely, synthetic mesh and biological mesh. Some cases of chronic inflammation as well as foreign body reactions, such as stiffness or fibrosis, and mesh infection have been reported when using synthetic mesh to treat hernia, which leads surgeons to switch to biological mesh. However, biological mesh is fairly new in the market, and captured very small market, in terms of volume, in 2014. One of the main reasons for this could also be the huge price difference between synthetic mesh and biological mesh. Biological mesh is expensive, due to which, in spite of very small share in terms of volume, it captured fairly larger share in terms of value. The Americas contributed the majority in terms of sales and revenue generation of biological mesh.

Some of the major players in the hernia mesh market globally include Medtronic(U.S.), Ethicon, Inc. (U.S.), C.R. Bard, Inc. (U.S.), Atrium (Sweden), W.L. Gore & Associates (Germany), Lifecell Corporation (U.S.) and B. Braun Melsungen AG (Germany)., among others.
